About Us

The Berkeley Recycling Center has been operating at Second and Gilman Streets in Berkeley since September 1982. The Center is home to Community Conservation Centers (CCC) and the Ecology Center (EC) who provide recycling services to the City of Berkeley. CCC operates buyback and drop-off recycling programs, and EC operates the residential curbside pick-up program. In combination with the City of Berkeley commercial pick-up program, these programs recycle about 19,500 tons per year of various materials, including newspaper, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles and scrap metals.

CCC also operates a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at the Berkeley Recycling Center which processes truckloads of recyclables from Ecology Center and City of Berkeley collection trucks. The delivered material is processed to remove contaminants, to sort into salable commodities and to prepare for shipment to market. Scrap and redemption revenues from the sale of these recyclable materials is expected to reach almost $3.0 million in FY 2004-05. These revenues help support the operating costs of Berkeley’s recycling programs.
