What is the accounts program? The account's program allows anyone -- individual or group -- to raise money by soliciting donations of recyclable materials.
How does it work? First, you establish an account at the Buyback so that anyone selling recyclables at the buyback can donate their sales to your account. For example, if I sell my recyclables at the Buyback and the value of my recyclables is $20.00, instead of taking a check for myself, I tell the paymaster to credit $20.00 to your account . Then, at the end of the month, the individual or organization you named on the account receives a check and an itemized receipt in the mail that is equal to all the donations made to that account during the month!
Who can open an account? Anyone can open an account! An individual! A group! A church or charity! Pick yourself, a school class, organization, troop, activity...whatever you want!
How do I open an account? It's simple! Get a copy of the accounts form and fill in the information requested for the individual or group of your choice. Then hand deliver, email, fax or mail your completed form to:
Accounts Program
669 Gilman Street
Berkeley , CA 94710
Fax: 510-559-8001
Email: accounts@berkeleyrecycling.org
Then what? Tell all your family, friends and members of groups or organizations to take their recyclables--bottles, cans, newspaper etc.-- to the Buyback at Second and Gilman Streets anytime between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday. Be sure to tell them the name of your account so they can tell the paymaster to donate the value of their materials to your account. Ask for copies of our "Price and Information Sheet" to distribute to people when you ask them to support your account.
The California Department of Conservation has a similar program as CCC. Like CCC, they encourage group recycling and have a fully developed program that offers ideas you can implement through CCC's Accounts Program. Their mascot is Recycling Rex and his message is: "Recycle, reduce, reuse and close the loop." For more information, visit their web site at:
